If you think that Vagrant is awesome and would like to have a simpler way to build your own boxes, Veewee is just what you’re looking for. But, if you’re not a Ruby guy, it may be a little tricky to get it working into your Windows box.

In this article I’ll going to show you how to install veewee in 3 easy steps.

Git for Windows

Go to http://git-scm.com and download the lastest version. The install is very straightforward, and all you have to do is follow the instructions.

NOTE I do recommend you to check the option “Checkout as-is, commit as-is” just to make your life easy. Also, you can select the option “Run Git and included Unix tools from Windows Command Prompt”

Ruby & DevKit

Go to http://rubyinstaller.org/downloads/ and get Ruby 1.9.x and DevKit TDM.

Run the install of Ruby 1.9 and place it on C:\ruby19 folder. Also, check the option “Add Ruby executables to your PATH”.

WARNING !!! Version 2.0 will not work!

Extract the DevKit to C:\ruby19\devkit , open the Command Prompt (cmd.exe) and type the commands as follows:

C:\> cd \ruby19\devkit
C:\> ruby dk.rb init
C:\> ruby dk.rb install

Your Ruby environment is ready!

Now, just follow the veewee documentation to install it from sources:

cd <path_to_workspace> git clone https://github.com/jedi4ever/veewee.git
cd veewee
gem install bundler
bundle install

That’s all. Now you can use bundle exec veewee to build your boxes ;)
